True...the assumption being that the student believes he/she will be able to locate the answer within the text rapidly, but they underestimate the fact that "application" of the content/question is primarily what the instructor is looking for, and will require critical thinking skills to apply the book content to the the question; not just "find the answer". 

True. Most students overestimate their skill level and abilities to take open book tests. An open book test seems like an "easier" way to take a test because the answers are in the book, however, it takes awhile to search and find the answers. Most students don't realize that the time they spend searching for the answer can cause them to take to long while taking the test. Not only does searching for the answer take some time, it also is not usually just as simple as finding the answer and moving on and there needs to be some explanation and examples of knowledge past the answer.
