Hugh Capet established the Capetian dynasty that ruled France for over 300 years. After being elected as King, Capet made Paris his capital and began bringing the rest of France under his control.

In doing so he managed to begin the process of strengthening the monarchy that was continued by his descendants until the end of the dynasty thereby laying the foundation for France as it is today.
