Basically, DNA is the molecule that stores genetic information in all living organisms. DNA cannot be used to make protein directly. Instead, the genetic information on the molecule is first encoded as mRNA. This process is known as transcription and it takes place in the nucleus of eukaryotic organisms.

After transcription, the mRNA undergoes some processing before it is moved out of the nucleus to the cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm, the mRNA attaches itself to the ribosome. The genetic codes on the mRNA are then translated to their respective amino acids in conjunction with another RNA, the tRNA.

The amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds using the translation machinery and the resulting polypeptide is then folded in specific ways depending on the function it is to perform.
