Northern economy was based off of industry while the Southern economy heavily relied on agriculture. Most Northerners owned factories and businesses and very few farmed because of rocky soil and cold climate which made the growing season short. For this reason, they did not depend on labor much. However, the South was just full of plantations and since most people worked as farmers, people began depending on slave labor rather than hiring people. The North was much more urban while the South was more rural.
The North wanted all new western states to be "free states" while the South wanted them to be "slave states". Why would the southerners care if the new states were free or slave states? They were already living in the southern states with their slaves. They could have easily just gave into those states being free. However, cotton, rice, and tobacco were hard on the soil and without the nutrients in the soil, the soil would not grow proper crops. Many southerners wanted to move into the Western states with their slaves because there, the soil would be filled with nutrients.
Southerners were much less educated than Northerners. Northerners tended to be less religious but more educated and the section was the power base of several political groups while southerners were very religious and nearly all Democrats.
The North had a "looser" interpretation of the Constitution while the South had a "stricter" view. Most Southerners believed that because the states had freely created and joined the union, they could freely leave at their will as well. Northerners believed that the national government had absolute power and more authority over the country’s issues than the individual states.
All these differences between the North and South slowly kept heating up and eventually led to the start of the Civil War.
