Something that has an unappealing appearance but has special meaning to someone for other reasons could be ashes. Many people cremate their loved ones and keep their ashes. They don't look appealing to the eye but they have a huge symbolic representation.

It could honestly be anything. For example an old guy. You'd probably think something like "Hes a creep" or "Hes a weirdo" But you dont actually know him, he could be like a special FBI agent or something. Or a toy. If the toy is super used, lets say a stuffed animal. Its super beat up, and super grey. That toy might be special to somebody. It couldve been given to them by a loved one, or they couldve won it somewhere. It just depends.
