African Americans joined the Union army after the Emancipation Proclamation because they knew that victory over the Confederacy would end slavery. They therefore signed up as much as they could and saw action in several battles including the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.

Even though the Union Army lost this battle, the bravery of the African Americans became legend with one of them even receiving the Medal of Honor. This improved their standing in the army and led to more African Americans being allowed to join the Union Army.
