The Plebeians of the Roman Republic were the common citizens. They did not like the fact that they could not make laws in the Republic as only those of higher status could do so.

In response the staged five secession plots whereby they could threaten secession by leaving Rome and going to nearby areas. The effects of this was that:

  • commercial activity would cease in the republic
  • the upper class citizens would have to do work for themselves

In conclusion, the first three secession plots happened in the 400s BCE and achieved near political equality for the Plebeians as they were elected into councils.
