The town reverend claimed that if Proctor signed a document stating that he and his wife practiced witchcraft, they would be released from the conviction. However, Proctor refused to sign the document as it would cause his name to be branded in a lie.

He concluded that the name was all he had and that was the only thing he refused to lose that way. For this reason, Proctor was sentenced to death.
