Figurative language is employed by Sandra Cisneros to express the explicit and implicit feelings of Rachael in this wonderful short story, "Eleven."

  • Many similes were used to help characterize Rachael as somebody who is growing and should be leaving behind childish behaviors.  She was told that she was no longer three, for example, because metaphorically "eleven is not three."

  • Even Rachael said that the "cake will be too late" to imply that her eleventh birthday had been ruined by the classroom events on her special birthday.  Again, on Rachael's birthday, a smelling red sweater was forced on her by Mrs Price.  The narrator describes this red sweater as a mountain that had overshadowed her path.

  • This red sweater symbolizes the social stigma that was unconsciously cast on Rachael, despite the fact that the true owner of the sweater was Lopez.

Thus, the author filled Eleven with many figurative expressions to enable the readers to understand the feelings (explicit and implicit) that the narrator is expressing.
