It made people more aware of their heritage and promoted the idea of a free sovereign state not controlled by a foreign land. Eg.the people of Ireland were not largely in support of a free Ireland until after England started to commit what could be considered now war crimes after the 1916 rising. Their wars worked against them rather then with them leading to the end of their empire and not the growth of it. hope this helps
