Further Explanation

The first black president in South Africa was elected through the full representation of the people of South Africa, in a multiracial election in 1994. After becoming President, Nelson Mandela abolished apartheid politics and fostered cooperation with people who had once oppressed him.

Speaking of freedom, in his autobiography, Nelson said: "To be free is not just to throw away one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and increases the freedom of others".

The transformation of Mandela's tribal model has legitimized the role of the ANC as an interpreter of the African consensus on the basis of the sacrifice of its leaders, in a context where its original assumptions are no longer applied. At the time the apartheid regime was ready to negotiate, Mandela himself was the most famous political prisoner in the world and a symbol of living sacrifice, who had adopted that role. This has been proven in his letter to P.W. Botha in July 1989, proposed negotiations between the ANC and the National Party as "the two main political bodies of the country". Mandela stressed that he acted on his own authority, not from the ANC, and implicitly gave the same authority to Botha.

Once Mandela was released from prison and negotiations began, the important idea that allowed the ANC to regulate the oppressed majority around the tribal model was that society consisted of "sectors" - women, business, labor, political parties, religious and sports bodies, and the like - each has its own role in play. This idea arose from the organizational needs of the struggle against apartheid when repressive conditions prevented them from mobilizing around direct political demands. Now used to isolate the leadership of the liberation movement from critical questions.
