Nelson Mandela became a central figure in the struggle to remove the influence of apartheid by eradicating racism, poverty and economic inequality and promoting racial reconciliation throughout the world through the United Nations.

Once Mandela was released from prison and negotiations began, the important idea that allowed the ANC to regulate the oppressed majority around the tribal model was that society consisted of "sectors" - women, business, labor, political parties, religious and sports bodies, and the like - each has its own role in play. This idea arose from the organizational needs of the struggle against apartheid when repressive conditions prevented them from mobilizing around direct political demands.
