Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome considers stress as a dependent variable, identifies three basic phases in the description of the disease it causes, where the alarm reaction involves the release of different hormones.

The general adaptation syndrome explains about the influence of stress on people's ability to cope or adapt to the consequences of injury or illness.

  • It identifies three basic stages which are: alarm reaction, resistance state and exhaustion phase.

  • In the alarm reaction, the organism, threatened by the circumstances, is physiologically altered due to the activation of a series of glands, especially in the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland (located in the lower part of the brain), and the adrenal glands.

  • The brain, upon detecting the threat, stimulates the hypothalamus, which produces "releasing factors" that constitute specific substances (hormones) that act as messengers for specific areas of the body.

Therefore, we can conclude that in the alarm reaction the body reacts to acute stressors by releasing hormones - these biochemical messenger substances prepare the body to fight off an infection.
