A submarine is made less dense than the water itself, that means, that it will naturally float up. Meaning, it is like that wood, that will naturally float up, but, if you take that wood and fill it in with water, then it will start to sink. (you can try this, it might be too dangerous tho). Same with the submarine, the submarine has one compartment where it releases and brings in water. When the operator of the submarine wants to go up, then the submarine releases water from the special compartment, when the operator of the submarine wants it to go down, then the submarine brings IN water from outside in order to go down.
