Late on 19 January, hit northern Madagascar as a moderate tropical storm, bringing with it heavy rain and moderate flooding. The storm crossed the island of Madagascar and entered the Channel in the early hours of 21 January.
After moving southwest across the Channel for another 2 days, strengthened into a Category 1 equivalent, due to low wind shear and high sea surface temperatures.
Early on January 23, peaked as a Tropical cyclone Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale as the center of the storm began to move off the coast.
