Linkage is the term applied when two genes fail to assort independently.
☆ The result is that the parental traits will be maintained.
☆ Also, the linked genes sit close together on a chromosome, making them likely to be inherited together (left).
When the chromosomal location for a disease phenotype has been established, then the genetic linkage scrutiny helps determine whether the disease phenotype is only caused by mutation in a single gene or mutations in other genes, giving rise to an identical or similar phenotype.
