Example 1. ) Say the number is 3 1/2
You multiply the denominator by the whole number then add the numerator. Once you get this number, you use the same denominator.
2 x 3 = 6 + 1 = 7
So 3 1/2 = 7/2
Another example (of the same thing)
7 3/4
7 x 4 = 28 + 3 = 31
So 7 3/4 = 31/4
Example 2. ) Say the number is 3 8/10
You reduce the 8/10 first by finding the greatest common factor (aka GCF - the greatest number both numbers can be divided by). In this case, the greatest common factor is 2. Divide both 8 and 10 by 2. > 8/10 = 4/5
Once you do this, you do the steps as explained in the first example.
3 4/5 > 3 x 5 = 15 + 4 = 19
3 4/5 = 19/5
