Using blocks of layered geometric tone and color, Feininger creates the illusion that the image is receding backward, with the idea that the tone and color create light in the background, using semi-transparent layers this creates a different intensity of color, which gives this illusion. 

Lyonel Charles Feininger was a known American-German painter and famous expressionist.  He was born in new york city and moved to Germany for further studies. He was born in the year 1871 and died in the year 1956.

Feininger creates the illusion by the method of painting the tone and color at the background in order to reflect it backward.
