In the bleachers at the basketball game, 1/4 of the fans are adult men, and 5/12 are adult women. What fraction of the fans are adults? What fraction of the fans are children?

You'll need to add together the fractions 1/4 and 5/12 to obtain the single fraction that represents the number of adults in the bleachers.
What is the LCD of 1/4 and 5/12?  Leave 5/12 as it is and modify 1/4 so that it has the denominator 12.  Combine the two resulting fractions.
make common denominators first... so 5/12 are men and 3/12 are women
Add the two together,
Together the bleachers are 8/12 af the way full with adults, simplified is 3/4

which means, assuming that the bleachers are 100% full, that 1/4 of the bleachers are children
