People have a greater tendency to accept authority as legitimate if they are economically or politically dependent on those who hold power.

Authority is power that is acknowledged and that people agree to use in accordance with predetermined rules. People pay attention to authoritative persons because they believe they are deserving of respect or because their position intrinsically calls for respect. In general, individuals consider the demands and goals of an authority person to be fair, legitimate, truthful, or genuine.

One of the founding fathers of sociology, Max Weber, came to understand this when he looked at both small- and large-scale power structures in relation to a society's economy. Weber created a categorization system for authority based on this research. His three different styles of authority are conventional, charismatic, and legal-rational.
