PPP and HDLC are both methods for accessing the services of WAN providers by using protocols that connect peer devices.

PPP is a byte-oriented protocol for communication over point-to-point links, whereas HDLC is a bit-oriented protocol for communication across point-to-point and multipoint links. HDLC is a bit-reliant, code-transparent synchronous data link layer protocol.
