PPP and HDLC are both methods for accessing the services of WAN providers by using protocols that connect peer devices.

A communications system known as a wide area network covers a huge geographic area. Leased telecom lines are frequently used to set up wide area networks (WAN).

One of the most popular kinds of WAN connections is a point-to-point connection. PPP connections are used to link LAN segments within a company's network as well as LANs to service provider WANs. The High-Level Data Link Control protocol is known as HDLC. HDLC is a Layer 2 protocol, same like the other two WAN protocols discussed in this article (see OSI Model for more information on Layers). A straightforward protocol called HDLC is used to link point-to-point serial devices.

PPP is a byte-oriented protocol for communication over point-to-point links, whereas HDLC is a bit-oriented protocol for communication across point-to-point and multipoint links. HDLC is a bit-reliant, code-transparent synchronous data link layer protocol.
