When might not obtaining informed consent can be justified when there is a significant and immediate health and safety risk to the person you support or to others.

In a medical emergency, when a person is unconscious and in danger of death or other serious outcomes which are affecting his health and safety, and in this situation if medical care is not given right away, informed consent may not be required before treatment.

A patient can be treated without consent only for a physical health problem. Or when a patient lacks capacity, or physical health problem because of a mental health problem.

Hence, in this case, the Mental Health Act says that a patient can be given treatment against their wishes.
