What is Hazing?
Hazing is defined as any intentional action or situation that puts members of a group and team, whether they are new or not, at risk for emotional and/or physical injury, regardless of their willingness to participate.
Some common factors associated with hazing are-
- Power differential between those in a group and those who want to join a group, or between upperclassmen and underclassmen members of a group
- Intentional initiation rite, practice, or ‘tradition’ involved
- Willingness to participate does not absolve responsibility for either party
- Some common examples of hazing are mentioned below-
- asks required of new recruits in order to "show" their worth
- verbal or psychological abuse
- forced alcohol consumption
- eating hot food and using other drugs is necessary
- the need to put up with challenges like keeping awake, doing menial duties, working out, running when blindfolded, etc.
- humiliation of potential or new members
- isolation of potential or new members
- Beating, slapping, or other violent behavior toward potential members or newcomers
