According to Cattell, grades recorded on a student's college transcript are L-data.

Cattell came up with a theory to understand the types of data used in the assessment of personality. He noted that in order to study correlations there should be two measure that must be correlated. In the process of systematically measuring various aspects of mind, a specific branch of psychology, known as psychometry developed.

To get a complete an unbiased measure of personality, Cattell came up with a concept called personality sphere, he collected information in the form of three types of data, L-data, Q-data and T-data. Here, L-data measures the life record of the individual.
