As World War I broke out in 1914, the German hegemony in the Pacific came to an abrupt end. On Samoa, New Zealand forces arrived in August, and the Germans submitted without a fight. Fighting broke out in German New Guinea, but Australian soldiers took control in September. They took over Nauru as well.

It changed the balance of power in the Pacific. Instead of an outright annexation, as the South Africans desired, German Southwest Africa was given to the Union of South Africa as a mandate. After suffering so much during the war, German East Africa emerged as a contested prize. The majority of the province was given to Britain as a mandate, and British interests predominated.
