The main lipid component is phospholipids, which vary in acyl chain length, saturation and branching and carry head groups that vary in size and charge. it allows passive movement. it is the net movement of gases or small unchanged polar molecules such as water across a cytoplasmic membrane from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration .it protects the internal structure. The plasma membrane and the cell membrane constitute the gram-negative envelope.
