Conflict theory is a social science approach that focuses on the disparities between various societal groupings. In the capitalist society of 19th-century Europe, the wealthy upper class—known as the Bourgeoisie—made up a small fraction of the populace. Additionally, the Proletariat, a lower class, made up the majority. We are aware that the majority controls society more. However, the authority was truly held by the Bourgeoisie.
They controlled industries that produced everything required by people. To make a living, they also sold the goods they manufactured. The factory owner was the only source of income for the Conflict theory proletariat, who relied on him for their daily needs. It wasn't simply a one-sided dependence, though.
Although they would never confess it for fear of losing part of their influence, manufacturing owners also relied on the workers to perform the tasks in their facilities. Between the proprietors of the factory and the employees, there was a huge economic gap. Economic equality would spur societal reform. When the workers Conflict theory recognized they were being taken advantage of. They would band together to raise class awareness.
Getting everyone on the same page through class consciousness will make them stronger and enable them to destroy the capitalist system. According to a model developed by Karl Marx, a society where one group economically exploited another would really contain the seed of Conflict theory its own demise.
