Given their position, Pluto , Eris are sometimes known as trans-Neptunian objects and dwarf planets (TNOs).

A dwarf planet outside of Neptune's orbit is referred to as a plutoid. As a result of their small size and extremely frigid surface temperatures, Plutoids are also sometimes referred to as "ice dwarfs." One of our solar system's largest dwarf planets is Eris. Despite being three times farther from the Sun, it is roughly the same size as Pluto.

Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) because it did not meet the three requirements for a full-sized planet. In essence, Pluto satisfies all the requirements save for the fact that it "has not cleared its neighboring region of other objects."
