According to President Harry S. Truman, Japan could have prevented the atomic bomb from being dropped within its borders by agreeing to Truman's surrender term.

When the US went to war against Japan President Truman was urged by Republicans to put pressure on Japan to surrender. If Japan surrendered, many lives could be saved. Another advantage of Japan's surrender was that the US could stop Soviet expansion ambitions in Asia. President Truman then urged Japan to surrender unconditionally. Included in the conditions of surrender were that Japan would lose all of its territory outside the Home islands, complete dissarmament and the Allies would occupy Japan.
