Figure-ground perception describes the visual system's propensity to reduce a scene to the main object we're focusing on (the figure) and everything else that makes up the background.
The well-known "faces or vases" illusion, also referred to as the Rubin vase, is frequently used to illustrate the idea of figure-ground perception.
You may see either two faces in profile (meaning you perceive the dark colour as the figure) or a vase in the center, depending on whether you see the black or the white as the figure.
Although it is a key idea in Gestalt psychology, the law of perceptual organisation rarely refers to the concept of figure-ground perception.
