American Temperance Union is the organization that led the movement against alcoholism in the united states during much of the nineteenth century.
The American Temperance Union promoted complete abstention from distilled and fermented alcoholic beverages in the US. They had 1.5 million new members by 1835. This led to disagreements between the teetotalers and the ATS's more moderate members. Although temperance societies existed there, as the movement's ties to the abolitionist struggle deepened, Southerners started their own teetotal societies. German and Irish immigrants opposed the campaign because they believed that drinking was an integral part of their cultures. When Irish priest Theobald Mathew founded the Teetotal abstinence Society in 1838, the Catholic temperance movement was born.
