A blood type (also known as a blood group) is a type of blood that is classified based on the presence or absence of antibodies and inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). Depending on the blood group system, these antigens can be proteins, carbohydrates, glycoproteins, or glycolipids. Some of these antigens can also be found on the surface of other types of cells in different tissues. Several of these red blood cell surface antigens can be derived from a single allele (or an alternate version of a gene) and form the basis of a blood group system.
There are four major blood groups (blood types): A, B, AB, and O. The genes you inherit from your parents determine your blood group. Each blood group can be RhD positive or RhD negative, for a total of eight blood groups.
