Social Categorization: Overview
- We categorise people using social knowledge in a process known as social categorization. In addition to the "Big Three" of sex, race, and age, many other aspects are also classified, including social standing, line of work, and even perceptually ambiguous categories like sexual orientation.
- Once established, our social classifications of others influence subsequent judgement and conduct, frequently without our awareness.
- Social categorization happens naturally and without much conscious effort on our side (Crisp & Hewston, 2007).
- In their 1978 study, Shelley Taylor and her co-workers (Taylor, Fiske, Etcoff, & Ruderman) showed their research subjects a slide and audio presentation of six college students, three male and three female, who they claimed had taken part in a discussion group.
- Each participant in the discussion group offered a recommendation for how to promote a college play during the presentation. The research participants' statements were moderated so that, overall, the length and calibre of the statements made by men and women were equal.
