The Protestant Reformation caused the questioning of the authority of the Catholic Church.

It also caused the Catholic Counter-Reformation. This was when the Catholic Church acknowledged its corruption and worked to reform itself.

An additional consequence are the religious wars that happened across Europe. Due to the new religious divisions, such as Calvinist vs Catholic vs Lutheran), violence broke out between rival nations on the basis of disagreements over faith. Overall, European society became more divided.
