If a man runs for an hour and a half at 8 miles an hour due south; and then he continues south on a bus traveling at 55 miles per hour, for 24 minutes. How far did he travel

distance = rate traveling * time traveling  d = r*t
The distance running = 3/2 hr * 8 mi/hr
The distance riding bus = 24/60 hr * 55 mi/h

the total distance is the sum of those two.

[tex]d = 8* \frac{3}{2} + 55*\frac{24}{60} [/tex]

d = 12 + 22 = 34 miles
