As a result, representatives from the thirteen colonies gathered in Philadelphia to draft one of the most important documents in our history, The Declaration of Independence the document, signed on this day two hundred and thirty-six years ago, informed King George III that the American colonies were overthrowing his right to rule them and that they were going to establish their own independent country most Americans know that Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, but few know that the foundational concepts of freedom from which Jefferson drew came from the pulpit and pen of a pastor who served decades before the War of Independence: the Rev. John Wise.
