Although they also fought for the abolition of slavery, the armies of the Union treated blacks, generally, as inferiors, with poor equipment and less pay. These individuals fought alongside Union soldiers, also working as cooks, nurses, and blacksmiths.  Almost 40,000 black soldiers died in the war. The firs commanding officer to serve in the Union Ary was Martin Delany, wich is a legend in the black people rights fight.
