B. Put people to work

During the Great Depression, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted the government to participate in the nation's affairs to overcome the economic crisis with his New Deal programs. One of its aim was to put people back to work. He succeeded in these goals as the government ended up employing millions of people through several government agencies.

A few examples of these agencies were the Civilian Conservation Corps (1933) that gave millions of young men employment on environmental projects, such as planting trees and constructing trails and shelters; the Works Progress Administration (1935) that employed mostly unskilled men to carry out public works projects, such as the construction of public buildings and roads; and the Tennessee Valley Authority (1933) that provided jobs and electricity to the rural Tennessee River Valley.
