The goal was to capture Richmond, Virginia from March to early August of 1862
The goal of the Peninsular Campaign was to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond from the Southeast during the American Civil War.

The Peninsular Campaign was fought during the spring and summer of 1862. During that time, the Union general-in-chief, George B. McClellan, sent his troops, by order of the President, Abraham Lincoln, down the Chesapeake Bay. There, he landed in Fort Monroe, where he marched his troops up the peninsula between the James and York river; hence the name, Peninsular Campaign. Eventually George B. McClellan and his troops would be overrun after having to fight from both sides of their forces by Robert E. Lee when he took control of the Confederate troops after former commander, Joseph E. Johnston was wounded after two days of battle. All in all the Campaign took approximately 29,000 lives and The Union was unsuccessful in taking the Peninsula from the Confederate troops.
