Percy said that any real number for k would cause the system of equations to have no solution. Explain the error in Percy’s statement. 6x + 4y = 14, 3x + 2y = k

Respuesta :

If you put in 7 for k,  the equations would be equivalent, therefore there would be infinitely many solutions. Also, multiplying 3x + 2y=7 by 2 will create 6x + 4y =14, which is an equivalent equation.

Percy's system equation will be correct for every value of k except 7.

Independent system

When two lines intersect at only one point the system of equations is known as the Independent system and the point denotes the solution.

Inconsistent system

When two lines are parallel and don't intersect at any point then the system of equations is known as the Inconsistent system and it has no solution.

Dependent system

When two lines are coincident therefore intersect at every point then the system of equations is known as the dependent system and it has infinite solution.

Given to us

6x + 4y = 14

3x + 2y = k

Error in Percy’s statement

For the system to have no solution the line of the equations should be parallel, which is possible for any value except 7.

As we can see the graph at k=7 the system of equations will give us two coincident lines therefore the system will have an infinite number of solutions.

Hence, Percy's system equation will be correct for every value of k except 7.
