How did helping the Taliban defeat Russia during the Afghanistan War help the Taliban in their efforts to resist United Nations forces today?

In your opinion, is helping the "lesser of two evils" a sound foreign policy decision, or should the United States allow warring nations to decide matters for themselves?

My opinion would be if the US was allies with anybody else in the world then we should use it to our advantage. because the US is deeply in debt to some countries so maybe the more we help them in times like that... then just maybe we can keep them off our backs.
