Although this isn't true as proved today, I believe this belief is what the Aztec's view of time was and can be inferred by this picture.

In the image, we can see the Aztec Sun Stone, the Aztec calendar. At the center of the disc there is the Solar god Tonatiuh and around it, there are four squares that represent the four solar periods previous to the current period of time. The entire Sun Stone represents a cyclic vision of time, which consists in periods of years that tend to repeat one after other.
