Piggy is better at critical thinking than Ralph is. While Ralph may have been the leader of the group of washed up boys, he always kept Piggy by his side for 2 reasons: One is because of piggy's glasses being able to make a fire through a concentrated ray of sunlight. The second reason is because piggy is the most intelligent of all on the island.
Though Ralph calls him "Piggy" so he knows his place, he also knows that piggy is the best thinker.
