Amblyrhynchus lizards also known as marine iguanas, are one of the subjects of Charles Darwin when he first came to observe the species in the Galapagos Islands. Among the observations he made on this organism include:
a. large lizards (2-3 feet long or 0.6-0.9 meters long)
b. disgusting and clumsy lizards
c. black as the porous rocks
d. crawl and seek their prey from the sea on rocks
e. assuredly became the land that they inhabit.

In his writings he wrote:

"The black Lava rocks on the beach are frequented by large (2–3 ft [0.6–0.9 m]), disgusting clumsy Lizards. They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea. I call them 'imps of darkness'. They assuredly well-become the land they inhabit."
