Why would water, sand, etc NOT be in the lungs if a person was dead before they entered the water?

Answer:

Water, sand, and other debris would not be found in the lungs of a dead person before they entered water.

Why?

When you're dead, you essentially cannot breathe to get oxygen into your lungs- so nothing can enter the lungs. Thus, when you're dead, you can't breathe, so you don't really inhale any particles into your system and no new substances can be introduced into the respiratory system.

However, if you're drowning and dying while submerged in water, you can get some particles/debris inhaled.

Water or sand can get into the lungs because when you die the air already in your lungs stays there, meaning when water or sand tries to enter there is something blocking it.
