In 1820, residents of the United States flocked to what is now known as Texas, through the Sabine River. Although still in a state of struggle for independence from Spain, Mexico with the newcomers and invited them to live in Texas. But the Mexicans gave two conditions that must be fulfilled by them, namely to become residents of Mexico, and embrace Catholicism.

In 1830, Mexico banned the import of slaves into Texas, so that it would threaten the livelihoods that had been brought by the American population in Texas, namely cotton production. They pretty much need the power of slaves for their production process.

The people of the United States refused to comply with Mexican regulations, so that relations between Texas and Mexico City became quite tense. Stephen Austin, one of the leading Americans in Texas went to Mexico City to make a deal with the government, but he did not succeed in getting a satisfying answer.

When the Mexican president, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invalidated the constitution in 1824, which granted every Mexican state considerable autonomy, American residents in Texas announced that the Texas region was an independent state from Mexico.
