What happens if someone who can't afford an attorney needs legal representation during a trial?

Local government will provide a loan for the defendant.
The person will be incarcerated for a minimum of 30 days.
The state will appoint a lawyer called a public defender.
The district attorney will represent the defendant at trial.

A. I don't believe this is the answer, because if you cannot afford a lawyer, it is obviously because you have financial problems, which a bank probably won't trust you with the loan.

B. I don't believe this is the answer, because this is unconstitutional, depending on the crime committed and other factors.

C. I believe this would be the correct answer, because the duty of a public defender is to defend people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, the public defender is paid for by public funds.

D. This isn't the answer, because a district attorney
is an official who represents a county, city or a state in criminal court matters. A district attorney will never be on your side.
