Zora Hurston, the author of the novel "The Eyes Were Watching God", offers a story of a how a beautiful African American woman named Janie was able to succeed in a time were many aspects of life, including slavery and further gender discrimination would just represent a much difficult feat to achieve.
Hurston's tone of voice is one that tries to show the audience how Janie never conforms with what she has and aims for something else after a period of time. It' s a tone of voice that would let the audience think the narrator is saying "I told you so".
