I am presuming you are talking about the intertidal zone.

The upper intertidal zone spends the most time out of the water. Animals such as crabs, barnacles, mussels, periwinkles and whelks inhabit this zone.
The middle intertidal zone is exposed and submerged by water equally during a 24 hour period. Animals such as sea anemones, barnacles, crabs, limpets and starfish inhabit this zone. The lower intertidal zone is underwater most of the time and is only exposed during low tide.  Animal such as abalone, sea urchins, shrimp and snails are found here.
