The old regime was the old order in France before the French Revolution. Under this regime, everyone was a subject of the French king as well as a member of a province and estate in France. There was no national citizenship that was given to the residents of France. All rights and status flowed down from the social institutions. These institutions were divided into three orders: clergy, nobility, and everyone else. In essence, the vast population living in France at the time, had not rights at all.
