The president had written both of them a letter and they responded, the reasons for the letter is related to problems within the administration. In Alexander Hamiltons's response to the president, he accused Thomas Jefferson for being the ring leader and mastermind behind the problems which the administration was facing, while he pledge allegiance to the president, he made him to know that he was willing to help mend the fences and make things work again. On the other hand, Thomas Jefferson was not happy that Alexander Hamilton had mentioned him as the troublesome person to the president, he denied the allegation and pledged allegiance to the president and his administration.
